The final stretch after the winning streak was rough but worth it

Maryland basketball had an incredible run from the middle of January when they beat Purdue at home to the middle of February when they beat Northwestern. They went from that to losing three out of the next four games. Ohio State was getting hot at the right time so that loss was foreseeable.

The pressure of gaining a top seed in bracketology and winning the Big Ten outright got to them and it’s understandable. Inside Maryland Sports’ Jeff Ermann heard from Mark Turgeon and Cowan Jr. about the pressure after the Rutgers loss.

"“It’s really frustrating. I think it’s just the weight of everything. There’s been great weight on us all year, being ranked high, playing at a high level. We’ve had some unbelievable wins. Thank God, right? Because I think we’re still I think near the top of our league if not at the top. And we’re highly respected around the country,” he said. “But we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to go get and it and we’ve got to get back to what our identity has been. I love my guys. We just hasn’t been a good 72 hours. We’ve got time to get ourselves right before Sunday and I imagine we will.” – Turgeon “For sure. Talked about it yesterday as a team. And we understand what’s at stake, but at the end of the day we’re playing basketball. It’s something we’ve got to have fun with. Obviously today didn’t go how we wanted to, but it’s on to the next one now. No one’s gonna feel sorry for us, so it’s on to the next one.” – Cowan Jr."

They succeeded in clinching a share of the Big Ten title with an 83-70 win over the Michigan Wolverines Sunday. They still have more work to do and this was a great way to enter playoff basketball.
