How did the Hokies do?

At the beginning of the 2019-20 season, the Virginia Tech Hokies exceeded expectations, especially with an early victory over a ranked Michigan State Spartans team but things went back to normal after that.

The Hokies did finish the nonconference slate with a record of 9-2 but with wins over a lot of Quadrant 4 teams (7-0) when it came to NET Rankings, things really evened themselves out when ACC play arrived. The Hokies went 2-9 against Quadrant I teams, 3-4 against Quadrant II teams and 4-3 against Quadrant III teams when it was all said and done.

With a combined record of 3-13 against Quadrant I and II matchups, the NCAA Tournament was an afterthought for the Hokies in 2019-20 but they don’t have much to hang their head about going forward.  Their young guards stepped up and aside from losing Landers Nolley II to the transfer portal, they found their identity through experience in Year 1 under head coach Mike Young.

They’ll return all but one player from last year’s group and add 6-foot-9 forward Keve Aluma to the mix in the frontcourt after he sat out due to transfer rules, then there’s the 2020 recruiting class. All in all, the Hokies are in good shape going forward.
