NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing Kerwin Walton’s final six
Vanderbilt Commodores
Vanderbilt predictably struggled in Year 1 under head coach Jerry Stackhouse but there were some signs of improvement. Most notably, the Commodores were able to secure three wins in SEC play despite losing one of their best players (Aaron Nesmith) to injury. While that might not seem like much of an accomplishment, it was certainly a step up from going winless in conference play the season prior to Stackhouse’s hiring.
Vanderbilt is not currently expected to take a major leap next year but adding Kerwin Walton could really help improve the program’s future. He is the type of player that already brings an elite skill (sharpshooting) to the court but also has a high ceiling that he could reach while with the program. Walton could join fellow freshmen Isaac McBride (PG, No. 137 in 2019) and Myles Stute (SF, No. 171 in 2020) in Nashville and that would be one of the more underrated trios of newcomers in the country.
Coach Stackhouse has a long way to go with regard to rebuilding the Vanderbilt program but Walton would be an excellent piece to add. Vanderbilt hosted the talented wing for a visit last fall and the program has clearly stayed in touch. If Walton wants to find a starring role right away at the collegiate level, this might be the place to go. Vanderbilt is looking for an influx of talent and Walton would be able to learn the college game on the fly in Nashville.
