Preview of the 2020-21 North Carolina Tar Heels

Simply put, North Carolina fans looking to get the taste of the 2019-20 season out of their mouth will be thrilled whenever the 2020-21 season starts up. On paper, the 2020-21 Tar Heels look like they are going to be a juggernaut. Now if the unlikeliest thing in the world happened and Cole Anthony stayed for his sophomore year, this could be an all-time team. But assuming the reasonable thing will happen and Anthony will depart for the NBA, Roy Williams will still be able to look forward to coaching a UNC team featuring a stacked frontcourt and five-star freshman Caleb Love replacing Anthony at the lead guard spot.

While all of the North Carolina seniors will be gone, only time will tell if freshman Armando Bacot and junior Garrison Brooks will depart. This will be perhaps the most intriguing thing to watch as five-star recruits Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler are both centers who are poised to be impact players sooner rather than later. Without knowing how things will shake out in the transfer portal—where North Carolina has been very successful—this is what the bulk of the Tar Heel squad could look like in the 2020-21 season:

PG- Caleb Love (FR)

SG- Leaky Black (SO)

SF- Puff Johnson (FR)

PF- Armando Bacot (SO)

C- Garrison Brooks (SR)

6th man (C/PF)- Day’Ron Sharpe (FR)

Bench (G)- Andrew Platek (SR)

Bench (PG/SG)- RJ Davis (FR)

Bench (PG)- Creighton Lebo (FR)

Bench (G)- Jeremiah Francis (SO)

Bench (G)- Anthony Harris (SO)

The above squad would have an awful lot of size and speed but is seriously lacking in any sort of depth on the wing. Obviously, the transfer market could change the Tar Heels fortunes considerably in that department. As it stands, Puff Johnson would be tasked with taking on the lion’s share of the minutes at the 3, something the 6-foot-7 freshman is very capable of. With easily, the deepest and most intimidating frontcourt rotation in the country, North Carolina basketball will be a contender for the ACC crown and much more in the 2020-21 season. Not a bad spot to be
