NCAA Basketball: Updated 2020-21 power rankings after NBA Draft deadline
Although another Big 12 program had an even better experience with the NBA Draft decisions, Kansas didn’t come out too bad from this. It was a given that star point guard Devon Dotson would be gone but both Marcus Garrett and Ochai Agbaji are coming back for another season. Considering how much unknown is surrounding this roster, those two are going to have major responsibilities holding everything together.
That includes in the frontline. Udoka Azubuike’s absence leaves a giant hole inside. The hope is that junior center David McCormack can fill those shoes this upcoming campaign. We haven’t seen much from the former top-30 prospect but that’s because he and Azubuike couldn’t play together on the court. And once freshman forward Christian Braun started to play well, his ability to spread the court with his shooting made him the ideal power forward for the Jayhawks. That can certainly work with both he and McCormack if none of the other forwards on the roster can break out and force more minutes on them.
On the perimeter, top JUCO prospect Tyon Grant-Foster and incoming five-star combo guard Bryce Thompson will be the x-factors. If both can be consistent double-digit scorers, then the Jayhawks won’t have any issue contending for another Big 12 title. But this is the first time in a long time that Kansas isn’t the preseason favorite to win the league. That could serve as great motivation for the program to keep its title.
