NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 12 teams in play for 5-star CG Hunter Sallis
After winning countless WCC championships and making the NCAA Tournament for 20 years in a row, Gonzaga Basketball is finally in the territory of landing five-star talent. They have their first-ever five-star commit out of high school in Jalen Suggs, along with top-60 combo guard Jalen Suggs as part of the 2020 recruiting class.
Things could get even better in the coming months for the program, with No. 1 overall recruit Chet Holmgren seriously considering the Bulldogs. As Suggs teammate at Minnehaha high school, Holmgren could pick Gonzaga and make them even more appealing for a star guard to join the 2021 recruiting class.
With Suggs likely “one and done” and junior guard Joel Ayayi possibly going pro (could also play the wing to replace Corey Kispert) after next season, Sallis could have a huge role as an off-guard for the team. But with Florida transfer Andrew Nembhard sitting out and set to be the next starting point guard for Gonzaga, Sallis may have to settle not having the ball in his hands as much.
Playing in the WCC also can be a drag, with the only big matchups coming against BYU and Saint Mary’s once league play starts. When you have an opportunity to play in the ACC, Big 12, or SEC, it’s hard to pass that up in favor of a mid-major. Gonzaga will have to hope that the official visit months ago left a last enough impression to negate some of the negatives.
