Utah – Can Alfonso Plummer star as a senior?

Larry Krystowiak’s Utah Utes may have had a bit of a down year in 2019-20 and guard Both Gach decided to transfer to Minnesota, but his team that went just 16-15 last season returns a nice young nucleus. That core includes leading scorer, junior forward Timmy Allen, who not only led the team in scoring (17.3) but also rebounding with 7.3 per game.

It also includes key pieces like junior forward Riley Battin and sophomore guard Rylan Jones who led the team in assists (4.5) and steals (1.5) in addition to being the Utes’ second-best three-point shooter in his first season.

This year’s Utes are young with just one senior, but that one senior is an important one, Alfonso Plummer. After arriving from Arizona Western College last season, he averaged eight points per game but was the team’s best shooter from distance, knocking down 42% from beyond the arc.

But, over the final six games of the year, Plummer played out of his mind, averaging nearly 19 points per game and knocked down 56% of his shots from deep including a conference tournament record 11 in Utah’s win over Oregon State in the opening round. If Plummer can carry some of that success into his final season then he becomes more than just a leader for this young Utah team.
