UCLA Bruins – Can Tyger Campbell take the keys?

The first year for Mick Cronin at UCLA was a successful one, as by the end of the year he had the Bruins playing their best basketball of the season as they finished one game behind Oregon for the Pac-12 regular-season title.

That is the reason for some serious optimism at Pauley Pavilion as nearly everyone returns from last year’s team as they welcome in four-star guard Jaylen Clark and small forward Johnny Juzang who is eligible after transferring from Kentucky last season. But, the biggest question for me when it comes to the Bruins is whether or not sophomore point guard Tyger Campbell is ready to take full control of the UCLA offense.

As a freshman last season, the 5’11 native of Iowa jumped in with both feet averaging 30 minutes per game, leading the team with five assists per game as well as 8.3 points. I am looking for Campbell to take a big leap as a sophomore when it comes to his offense, looking for better shots to improve on the 35% field-goal percentage last season.

In February he gave fans a glimpse of what he is capable of, averaging 12 points and seven assists during the month leading the Bruins to an 8-1 record. Other players on the UCLA roster may get more ink and publicity, but Campbell will be a huge key for them in 2020-21.
