Kentucky Basketball: Preview of Wildcats 2020-21 depth chart
Point Guards
A long line of point guards have come to Lexington and developed into stars almost immediately, with John Wall serving as the prime example. Just last year, the Wildcats had both Immanuel Quickley and Ashton Hagans on the roster. The next freshman trying to join that illustrious list? Devin Askew.
Askew is not the most hyped of the point guard recruits Calipari has brought to Kentucky. He ranked as the No. 32 overall prospect and No. 7 point guard in the Class of 2021 (per 247 Sports) before reclassifying and enrolling a year early. Still, his sharp jump shot and strong basketball acumen should push him to 20-25 minutes per game at the jump.
Should Askew falter, Davion Mintz could push for more minutes – and perhaps even the starting job – relatively quickly. The Creighton graduate transfer averaged 9.7 points and 3.0 assists per game during the 2018-19 season. But he spent the entirety of last season on the sidelines, nursing an ankle injury. Mintz’s ceiling is limited, but he should still play 15-20 minutes a game, more if Askew struggles transitioning to the college game.
Walk-on Riley Welch will likely serve as the third point guard off the bench. Considering the senior played in just four games last season, don’t expect to see a ton of him outside of blowouts in 2020-21.
