SEC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2020-21 season
2019-20 SEC Record: 12-6
After losing Chuma Okeke, Bryce Brown, Jared Harper, Horace Spencer, and Malik Dunbar after the 2018-19 season (to the NBA and graduation), and Samir Doughty, J’Von McCormick, Isaac Okoro, Anfernee McLemore, Austin Wiley, and Danjel Purifoy (also to the NBA and graduation) after the 2019-20 season, I think this is the year that Auburn may struggle a bit to keep pace with some of the more seasoned SEC teams. It may not be what Tigers fans want to hear right now, but it makes sense, considering the number of quality players they lost.
However, there is a lot of hype surrounding incoming 5-star freshman, Sharife Cooper, who has a reputation of being a big-time scorer. He could make a lot of noise this season, and there may be some games where he finds that he must will the Tigers to victory in the final few minutes.
And there is no doubt that 2nd-year players such as Jaylin Williams, Allen Flanigan, and Devan Cambridge will have expanded roles this season, and could provide valuable assistance to him. This will certainly be an interesting season for the Tigers, and there are still a ton of questions that need to be answered, but as of right now, I don’t think anyone should be shocked if they fail to finish in the top 3 again.
