6. Georgetown Hoyas

The Hoyas are looking to regain momentum on the recruiting trail in all areas, but the backcourt depth specifically needs help. After losing starting guards James Akinjo (Arizona) and Mac McClung (Texas Tech) to transfer in the same season, as well as graduating several other key contributors, the depth is looking a bit desperate. Head coach Patrick Ewing is continuing to look for new solutions to repair the team’s identity and continuity, but it appears the process is going to be slow.

Adding a guard of Roddy Gayle’s caliber could be significant towards changing the program’s momentum and frankly improving Ewing’s job security. His ability to operate in both guard positions at a high level will be instrumental towards developing the rest of the roster and putting forth the best five players to compete in the Big East.

However the Hoyas are starting to stockpile guards in the 2021 class, in addition to the recently signed 2020 class, that could limit his potential impact when he steps on campus.

5. Marquette Golden Eagles

The expected transition from star guard Markus Howard to Ohio State transfer DJ Carton should be a smooth one for Marquette this season. However, the talents and NBA potential of Carton could leave the Golden Eagles without a go-to guard heading into the 2022 season. Coach Steve Wojciechowski secured the commitment of promising guard Stevie Mitchell earlier this summer, but it’s unsure how quickly the expected adjustment to the college game will occur.

However, a pairing of Mitchell and Gayle could be very fruitful for Marquette. Each guard has a lot of versatility in their game and the projected roster in 2022 points to a thinning backcourt group. Gayle certainly could make an immediate impact once he steps on campus and receives ample opportunities on the court to prove himself as a reliable asset. The Golden Eagles just may have attempted to get into the sweepstakes a little late to secure his services.
