Mike White wins SEC Coach of the Year

Whether you are checking out our own preseason top-25 power rankings, which gives Florida Basketball and honorable mention at No. 29 or you are referring to the AP Preseason Poll that has the Gators out of the top-25 with just 69 votes received, Head Coach Mike White is going to exceed expectations.

The Gators began the 2019-20 pre-season ranked No. 6 in the nation, they would spend a week out of the top-25 after a loss to Connecticut, a win over Marshall in late November was not enough to get them back in the top-25 for the rest of the season.

The 2020-21 season will be a steady climb up the national rankings as Florida tries to challenge Kentucky and Tennesse for the top spot in the SEC. After finishing SEC play with an 11-7 conference record, Coach White saw Kerry Blacksear Jr (12.8 ppg) graduate and guard Andrew Nembhard (11.2 ppg) transfer to Gonzaga. Yet, the Gators have a lot of talent returning.

Coach White, who won the award in 2017 will feature a starting lineup that consists of now eligible transfer from Cleveland State Tyree Appleby (14.3 ppg),  SEC breakout candidate Scottie Lewis (8.5 ppg), and returning leading scorer Keyontae Johnson (14 ppg). The addition of 6’7 freshman Samson Ruzhentsev will give Coach White six players who were once ranked on the Recruiting Services Consensus Index (RSCI) Top-100.

We will not have to wait long to see how good the Gators are, as they are scheduled to play Virginia on Nov. 29, 2020, at the Basketball Hall of Fame Bubbleville.
