Guards are doing more than one thing

One thing the Hokies did well against the Highlanders was share the basketball. They dished out 18 assists and ironically, it wasn’t a Wabissa Bede-led attack. Instead, Tyrece Radford led the way for the Hokies with five assists.

Bede had two assists despite averaging a career-high 5.5 per game in 2019-20. That could be a good thing considering Bede also had nine points, three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

He asserted himself as a scoring threat, showing off his midrange game and ability to create off the dribble. He’s due for a strong senior season as one of the leaders on both ends.

Radford, the Hokies leading scorer from a season ago (10.2 ppg), finished with nine points, five assists, three rebounds, and a steal. He knocked down a 3-pointer as well, something he didn’t do last season until his 11th game as a freshman.

He showed he can distribute, rebound and still score to start his sophomore campaign. It’s safe to say his game is developing on all fronts and as the season progresses, look for him to lead the way on offense as well.
