NCAA Basketball: The last decade’s most random 40-point scorers
Darius Dawkins (Jacksonville, 2017): 41 Points
In 2016, Jacksonville’s Darius Dawkins was one of college basketball’s prolific three-point shooters. Through 19 games, he had made 70 treys (at a scorching 50% rate) before a knee injury cut his season short. Dawkins returned for the 2017 season as a reserve. Year over year, his minutes per game halved. His scoring average dropped to 7.2 PPG.
For one game, however, Dawkins returned to his old form.
Enter the Knights of Middle Georgia State University. Just 3 years earlier, MGSU had been promoted from the Junior College ranks to NAIA. It’s no secret that the Knights would be a heavy underdog against any Division I team. They probably had a detailed game plan for Jacksonville, but I don’t think anyone could have planned around what Darius Dawkins was about to do.
After getting called from the bench, Dawkins went ignorant from deep. In just 27 minutes, he made 13 of 17 three-point attempts, finishing with 41 points. He didn’t attempt a free throw or notch a single assist. For one game, Dawkins went into full-on Klay Thompson mode.
The 13 three-point makes set an Atlantic Sun Conference record. He was just two short of the all-time Division 1 record. Dawkins is one of two players in the last 10 years to put up 40+ points with no free throw attempts.
