Bracketology 2021: Gonzaga, Virginia Tech among week’s biggest winners
Richmond Spiders
In the Atlantic 10, it is often hard to pick a clear favorite to win the league heading into any season. It is often even more difficult determining how deep and competitive the conference may be when comparing it to other big leagues across the NCAA Basketball landscape.
There are years in which it seems like half of the Atlantic 10 deserves an NCAA Tournament berth, and then there are years when only two of the league’s teams deserve a spot in the dance. Well, given the statement victory made by Richmond, and the overall strong showing of the conference as a whole during week 1, things are looking up for the Atlantic 10 to start the 2020-21 season.
Out of everyone in the league, Richmond picked up the biggest win of opening week as the Spiders went into Kentucky and dominated the #10 ranked Wildcats. The young Wildcats struggled to deal with the experience and depth of the Spiders. This is a problem that most teams will be forced to contend with when facing Richmond this year.
Defensively, the Spiders completely overwhelmed Kentucky. They forced 21 turnovers, most of which led to quick and easy points on the other end of the floor. This aggressive defense along with the depth and experience will set them up to potentially have a great season.
With such a strong showing on Sunday, Richmond definitely sent a message to the entire Atlantic 10 Conference. They are certainly on the rise when talking NCAA Tournament bracketology.
