Iowa Basketball: 3 takeaways from impressive win over #16 North Carolina
By Andrew Tineo
Iowa’s backcourt was not shy of shooting
Roy Williams may go to sleep tonight and will be thinking about all of the three-pointers from Iowa. As a matter of fact, the Hawkeyes had 40 three-point attempts on the night. Little was the audience knowing that the guards of Iowa would show up playing like the 2016-2017 Golden State Warriors, connecting on 17 of those 40.
On a night where Garza was not on his game, the entire backcourt showed up in a big way. Bohannon led all of the guards with 24 points on 7-16 shooting from beyond the arc.
Iowa isn’t the biggest team and they aren’t going to dominate you with supreme athleticism. However, this is among the oldest teams in basketball, and take pride in being smart.
Although it wasn’t the most complete performance and there was a cold spot, especially early in the 2nd. When North Carolina would take their first lead of the game, Iowa was cold from beyond the arc. They made just two of their ten attempts and momentum started to shift in favor of North Carolina.
An elite team can play at a high level, even without their most efficient player having their best game. Iowa is not near being a perfect team and has their fair share of flaws. However, one key ingredient to a deep tournament run is experience.
Four of their five starters are upperclassmen and only have one freshman that plays significant minutes. That shows how many years of experience is up and down this team, with more to come in the future. The guards showed that, even on a bad day for Garza, they can be among the best backcourts in College Basketball.
