NCAA Basketball: Kentucky’s struggles, Luka Garza among week’s biggest takeaways
By Adam Childs
3. Luka Garza is special
Garza was runner-up in the national player of the year voting last year to Obi Toppin of Dayton, but many thought he should have won it. After flirting with the NBA he decided to return for his senior season and he has not disappointed.
Garza is currently averaging 30.4 points per game and is putting up video game type of first halves for the Hawkeyes. Twice he has scored over 20 points in the first half of games and single handily outscored the other team.
Try and shut him down and good luck as he is more than willing to get his teammates involved in the game as he did against North Carolina. In that game, Garza was “held” to just 16 points but the Hawkeyes still pulled out the win against the Tar Heels.
The best part is he isn’t taking a ton of shots like some NBA players do to get their points. He is shooting 67.9% from the field and a ridiculous 68.8% from deep.
Garza is having a season we rarely see and if you aren’t paying attention you need to. He is leading the way for National Player of the Year and it isn’t close right now.
