Big East Basketball: 2020-21 power rankings heading into New Year
1.Villanova 8-1 (3-0)
There’s no argument here or at least there should not be. Philadelphia is home to the best basketball program in the Big East and is probably the 3rd best in the country behind Gonzaga and Baylor.
The main reason for that is the Wildcats also might have the best basketball player in the country. Jeremiah Robinson Earl (16.2 Pts, 7.6 Reb, 2.0 Ast) has increased his scoring average by 3.5 points from his freshman to his sophomore season and the only thing holding him back from averaging a double-double is how good the rest of his team is. The Wildcats also have one of the steadiest point guards in the country, as Colin Gillespie (15.3 Pts, 2.9 Reb, 4.2 Ast) steers the ship for the third straight season.
There are a lot more pieces that make this engine go but all you really need to know is the Wildcats have the 11th best offensive rating in the sport and are about as complete as it gets.
Imagine this, though. They are going to get a lot better. Former top 20 recruit, Bryan Antoine and core contributor Dhamir Cosby Roundtree have yet to play this season due to injury. Both are slated to return in mid-January. Currently, Nova goes eight deep and is the clear top team in the conference but at 10 deep this is a really scary team that can challenge Gonzaga or Baylor.
