NCAA Basketball: Duke and Virginia move up in latest top-25 power rankings
14. Clemson Tigers (9-1, 3-1)
Just one game for the Tigers this past week but it needed extra time, as they trailed against NC State for a good amount of the game before forcing overtime and eventually winning, 74-70. Most of the team struggled offensively except Nick Honor, who scored a game-high 21 points off the bench with five made three-pointers.
Covid-related news only has Clemson playing one game for the upcoming week but it’s a big one in the Virginia Cavaliers coming to town This will a low-scoring matchup featuring two of the best defensive units in the country facing off.
13. West Virginia Mountaineers (9-4, 2-3)
After losing starting center Oscar Tshiebwe to the transfer portal, forward Derek Culver stepped up big time against Oklahoma State, going for 22 points and 19 rebounds. Guards Miles McBride and Taz Sherman had 41 points combined in the team’s 87-84 win over Oklahoma State. The Mountaineers had another close game this past weekend at home against No. 4 Texas but allowed a game-winning three from the wing to lose 72-70.
West Virginia faces an even tougher conference game coming up, this time against No. 2 Baylor. A loss there would drop them to 2-4 in league play and put them all but out of the conference title race. An upset and then beating TCU afterward on Saturday would keep them in the hunt.
12. Houston Cougars (10-1, 5-1)
After losing preseason AAC Player of the Year guard Caleb Mills to the transfer portal, the Cougars have remained just fine overall. They won all three games from this past week, beating SMU, Wichita State, and Tulane. Guard Marcus Sasser has accepted his elevated role, going for a career-high 28 points against the Green Wave.
Although losing a talented guard hurts Houston’s depth, they still have the guard play to remain the clear-cut favorite in the AAC. They look to keep things going on the road on Thursday against South Florida.
