Keeping the message the same during a transition is important

The most important thing that North Carolina did when trying to ensure that their new head coach would succeed comes down to one word, continuity. When a new coach comes in sometimes the hardest to do is communicate your vision for the program and get the players you have or are trying to recruit to buy into the message you are trying to deliver.

The easiest way to make sure the transition is smooth and the lines of communication stay open is to keep things in-house if possible. That’s what UNC did in hiring Davis, it allows the longtime Williams assistant to show the players on the roster in addition to those potential future Tar Heels that even though there is a new man in charge the principles and philosophies that have made North Carolina one of the most successful programs in the history of college basketball will not change.

Having the continuity of an assistant of the former coach in charge and a staff made completely of players that have put on the uniform, likely gives one less thing to worry about as a first-time head coach, the message from day one will be loud and clear that things are still going to be done the Carolina way.
