NCAA Basketball: Top 10 impact head coaching hires from 2008 offseason
By Joey Loose
10. Sean Woods (Mississippi Valley State)
In recent history, Mississippi Valley State has been one of the worst programs in all of Division 1. The program was in much better shape back in 2008 but was once again faced with an opening and a roster that needed some big shaping done for the future. The Delta Devils brought aboard a young head coach to get the program on track again, and it paid off for them.
Sean Woods began his college basketball journey on Rick Pitino’s Kentucky team, remaining with the program after violations committed by his predecessor. He got into coaching a decade later with stints on a few D1 staffs. He had spent the last two seasons as an aide at TCU before receiving his first head coaching gig.
Woods was successful with the Delta Devils, as their win total improved in each of his four seasons. By year three, they were third place in the SWAC, but it’s the 2012 season that really secured his legacy. That team won 21 games and returned to the NCAA Tournament, the program’s most recent appearance. Woods departed for Morehead State soon after, and Mississippi Valley State hasn’t won more than nine games in a season ever since.
