Detroit Mercy Basketball: Antoine Davis’ road from Indiana to the Titans
Davis always wanted to play for his dad
Even though he’s been around basketball his entire life, playing hoops was never a guaranty. He said it wasn’t until the family moved to Houston when Mike took the head coaching job at Texas Southern that basketball became serious. Davis remembers that time, telling me, “I didn’t really get into basketball until I was in middle school when I moved to Houston when my dad got the job at Texas Southern. We started working out and taking basketball training seriously when I met with John Lucas.”
His Journey to Detroit Mercy was an interesting one. He had originally committed to Kelvin Sampson and Houston out of high school, but after talking with his family he says, “It was a group decision, I met with my parents about it. My dad thought it would be a good situation to come with him, he really wanted me to play for him.”
He is also very thankful for what Coach Sampson did for him (granting his release), something that until recently hasn’t exactly been the norm. He said about the situation, “I thank Coach Sampson to this day for even letting me, for him giving me my release and letting me go and play for him. I really thank him for that.” He would join the Titans as a walk-on in order to open up another scholarship for the program, and so far, it has been a match made in heaven.
