SEC Basketball: Updated early power rankings for 2021-22 season
By Matt Melton
8. Mississippi State Bulldogs
Previous Ranking: 10
The Bulldogs you could argue is one of the biggest risers in the SEC over the past month or two solely due to their multiple impact additions through the NCAA Transfer Portal. Not only does Mississippi State return multiple impact players, but have hit a home run securing multiple transfers in recent weeks.
Michigan State transfer Rocket Watts and NC State transfer Shakeel Moore add extra depth to an already talented backcourt, while North Carolina transfer Garrison Brooks and Memphis transfer DJ Jeffries do the same to the frontcourt. You could’ve made an argument in May that the Bulldogs were the sleeper team in the SEC going into next season, but head coach Ben Howland and Mississippi State you could argue are a sleeper no more.
7. Auburn Tigers
Previous Ranking: 4
Yes, Auburn fell even while adding an additional player, but the Tigers still enter the 2021-22 season as a 100% NCAA Tournament caliber team. Despite losing a commitment from four-star guard Trey Alexander, forward JT Thor to the NBA, and a one-time transfer in Desi Sills, the Tigers have also added as well.
Auburn’s backcourt received a massive boost mainly as they added Georgia transfer KD Johnson along with the return of guard Allen Flanigan to pair with an already deep frontcourt headlined by five-star Jabari Smith and North Carolina transfer Walker Kessler. Despite not everything going the way of the Tigers over the last couple of weeks, Auburn will enter the season as one of the most exciting teams in the SEC.
