SEC Basketball: Updated early power rankings for 2021-22 season
By Matt Melton
6. Ole Miss Rebels
Previous Ranking: 6
If you were to look at the most potentially underrated teams in the SEC going into next season, one could argue that Ole Miss is the team staring you right in the face. Despite having to replace nearly 35 PPG off of last season’s team, this should be easy for the Rebels on a roster that was already headlined by the returning Jarkel Joiner, as well as incoming four-star Daeshun Ruffin.
Head coach Kermit Davis however also went out and added notable frontcourt additions in Duke transfer Jaemyn Brakefield and Miami transfer Nysier Brooks to an already talented roster. The Rebels will enter the 2021-22 season with a very talented and deep roster, making them one of the teams to watch early on in the SEC this season.
5. LSU Tigers
Previous Ranking: 7
After appearing to be one of the biggest unknowns in the SEC a little over two months ago, the Tigers appear set at the top of the conference entering the season. While the recent return of star forward Darius Days is obviously the move that arguably sticks out the most, the most impactful may arguably come from some other additions.
LSU has since landed two instant impact transfers in Illinois transfer Adam Miller and Cincinnati transfer Tari Eason, as well as five-star center Efton Reid to pair with what was already a talented group of younger players. While the Tigers still have to find a way to replace names such as Thomas, Watford, and Smart, LSU has more than enough talent and depth to be one of the top teams in the SEC from day one.
