NCAA Basketball: Analyzing the 10 teams in play for transfer Baylor Scheierman
Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns got good news with the return of leading scorers Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr for next season but they certainly could use more offense. And while landing double-digit scoring transfer guard Sir’Jabari Rice from New Mexico State adds depth, a guy like Scheierman would be a great boost for Texas since he can play multiple positions and serve multiple needs. It also would allow Allen to be bumped to the power forward position, which would help out spacing even more.
The concern here would be how Scheierman transitions into the system. If he’s not good enough defensively that would affect how much he plays. Plus, going from one of the fastest-paced offenses at South Dakota State to one of the slowest-paced at Texas would be the ultimate culture shock in terms of basketball. We saw how that affected Carr last season so from a “fit” standpoint, I’m not sure how the Longhorns can convince him that they’re the best landing spot.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
The Deacons had a major breakout season, thanks to the play of transfers, Alondes Williams and Jake LaRavia. Their play showed that Coach Steve Forbe’s system can work for just about anyone and the offense is a natural fit for someone like Scheierman.
The concern here is that Wake Forest could take a major step back if both Williams and LaRavvia aren’t coming back, as the roster already lost several key role players to graduation. They did land Marist transfer Jao Ituka recently and Scheierman would have a leading role on an ACC team but can this one make a more compelling case than Duke here?
Among the 10 teams in play, I’m doubtful that Arkansas, Clemson, and Mississippi State have any hope here, while Texas and Wake Forest look like longshots. The two local programs (Nebraska and Creighton), as well as the three blue bloods (Kansas, Duke, Kentucky) probably have the best shots here for Baylor Scheierman, whose decision will likely make major noise in NCAA Basketball soon enough.
