NCAA Basketball: Updated WTE 2022-23 power rankings after transfer deadline
16. Saint Louis Billikens
2021-22 record: 23-12 (12-6 in Atlantic 10)
It’s been an offseason of incredible highs and lows for Billiken fans. It started out with the announcement that star guard Javonte Perkins is coming back for a 6th-year after missing this past season with an injury. Adding a 6’6 guard that averaged 16 ppg on 38% shooting from deep to a team that won 23 games makes them a preseason top-25 team.
Or so I thought.
That was assuming that the rest of the key players are returning, including Yuri Collins, the nation’s leading passer. He entered the transfer portal over a week ago and it looked as if he was gone, only to reverse course a few days later. He, Perkins, and 16 ppg Gibson Jimerson create one of the best backcourts in NCAA Basketball.
Among the other key returning pieces are starting center Francis Okoro, Terrence Hargrove, and Fred Thatch. Saint Louis also lost Deandre Jones to the transfer portal and starting wing Jordan Nesbitt to the pros but did land Missouri transfer Javon Pickett, who’ll likely be the team’s 6th man next season.
There are few weaknesses on this roster if Perkins comes back healthy. And now that the deadline to enter the portal has passed, fans won’t have to worry about Collins or others leaving.
