NCAA Basketball: Updated WTE 2022-23 power rankings after transfer deadline
14. Villanova Wildcats
2021-22 record: 30-8 (16-4 in Big East)
Despite not having any transfer portal news to talk about, Villanova somehow became the biggest offseason story thus far, losing Hall of Fame Head Coach Jay Wright suddenly to retirement. The two-time national champion head coach left the game and his replacement was quickly named in former program assistant and Fordham Head Coach Kyle Neptune.
Coach Nepture did a great job in his lone season with the Rams and benefits from a roster Coach Wright left behind that’s ready to win now. They do lose veteran stars, Collin Gillespite and Jermaine Samuels, and former five-star prospect Bryan Antoine has entered the transfer portal.
But assuming that Caleb Daniels returns from the NBA Draft process, the team returns plenty of production. He and 15 ppg scoring guard Justin Moore create one of the better perimeters in NCAA Basketball, while forwards Eric Dixon and Brandon Slater are coming back as well. Then there’s the incoming recruiting class, who have all said that they’re staying with Villanova after the coaching change.
If top-30 incoming forward Cam Whitmore can have an immediate impact, the Wildcats can once again be good enough to win the Big East. As long as Coach Neptune can keep them in contender status, this roster will be good enough to survive not having Gillespie leading the way.
