NCAA Basketball: Updated WTE 2022-23 power rankings after transfer deadline
22. Texas Longhorns
2021-22 record: 22-12 (10-8 in Big 12)
Compared to top-5 preseason expectations, the Longhorns were a disappointment overall. But a Round of 32 appearance salvaged the season and puts the team in a decent spot in the offseason, thanks to some good news from multiple returning players.
Leading scorer/rebounder and former Utah forward Timmy Allen (12.1 ppg and 6.4 rpg) is back for a 5th year, along with starting point guard Marcus Carr. The Minnesota transfer went from 19 ppg to 11 ppg and had his fair share of struggles, but he has experience in this Texas system and played much better in the final few weeks of the season. If Carr carries that over to next season, the team’s offense will get a major boost.
Other returning players include forwards Christian Bishop and Dylan Disu. But there are several departures, including Tre Mitchell, Courtney Ramey, Devin Askew, and Andrew Jones. However, the backcourt has been revamped, landing double-digit scorer Sir-Jabari Rice from New Mexico State, along with four-star incoming freshmen, Rowan Brumbaugh and Dillon Mitchell. And Arterio Morris is a borderline five-star combo guard recruit that can play alongside Carr in the backcourt.
Texas doesn’t have much size at all and that proved to be an issue last season. Landing another center with 6’10 or taller height is the most important need for the rest of the season but based on the overall talent they currently have, the Longhorns should be in the top 25.
