NCAA Basketball: Updated WTE 2022-23 power rankings after transfer deadline
20. Texas Tech Red Raiders
2021-22 record: 27-10 (12-6 in Big 12)
The Red Raiders have been going through a lot of roster news in the past week. First, the good news. They landed 6’5 wing D’maurian Williams from Gardner-Webb, coming off a season of 14.5 ppg and 39% shooting from three-point range. He’s a quintessential “3 and D” player that fits in Coach Mark Adam’s system both ways. They also landed Oregon transfer De’Vion Harmon, who can be their starting point guard and is familiar with the Big 12 after spending two years previously at Oklahoma.
Texas Tech also got Fardaws Aimaq, one of the top transfers from the portal this offseason. The Utah Valley center averaged 18.9 ppg and 13.6 rpg this past season and was not only the WAC Player of the Year but also was twice named Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He gives the team a true low-post option at center and is a good replacement for leading scorer Bryson Williams.
It hasn’t been all good, as the Red Raiders lost not only Terrence Shannon Jr. (officially) but also 6’6 wing Kevin McCullar to the transfer portal. With former top-50 prospect Jaylon Tyson on 6’6 wing Kealon Allen on the roster, they can withstand these losses. And with Kevin Obannor coming back for one more year to pair with Aimaq, Texas Tech will have a quality frontcourt to compete in the Big 12.
