Tyrese Hunter

Sophomore, Guard, Iowa State

11 points, 4.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds

The Cyclones shocked a lot of basketball writers last season, rebounding from a dreadful 2021-2022 campaign to a season that saw them reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Freshman guard Tyrese Hunter was a big part of this success, being a dependable playmaker and partner to team scoring leader Izaiah Brockington.

Hunter finished the year with a top 40 assist rate with room to improve and cut down on turnovers. His stat line showcased his ability to impact the game on multiple levels, which is notable considering he measures in at all of 6-feet. Hunter’s athleticism made him a driving threat, with over 40% of his attempts coming at the rim at a 54.8% success rate.

Hunter is also a dependable defender as well, which would bolster a backcourt strength for the Zags. He averaged 2 steals per game and a steal rate of 3.8 last season. Few over the last several seasons have pivoted to wanting as many ballhandlers and initiators as possible in his rotations and having Hickman and Hunter play off of each other or staggered would be a huge advantage over most teams in the country. Both are capable of creating their shot off of the dribble but also facilitating and finding the open man.

Gonzaga is one of six teams that are in Hunter’s final list. The Zags are joined by Kansas yet again as well as Louisville, Texas, Tennessee and Purdue. The G League Elite Camp and draft process rear its head into this decision as well, as Kansas’ Jalen Wilson turned heads this last weekend and earned himself an invite to the general combine. Should Wilson forego college and stay in the draft, Kansas could likely land not just McCullar but Hunter as well.
