NCAA Basketball: Top 10 remaining players left in 2022 transfer portal
2. F Pete Nance – Northwestern Wildcats
2021-22 stats: 14.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.7 apg
Nance started as both a sophomore and junior but he had a breakout campaign this past season as a senior, leading Northwestern in both scoring and rebounding. That includes 26 of 30 games ending in double figure scoring and a career-high performance of 28 points and 14 rebounds against Maryland. And although he’s a 6’10 forward, Nance was comfortable from deep, making 45% of his attempts from beyond.
I mentioned before had few top-tier options there is at the power forward position but Nance could start and play anywhere in the country. Teams that have needed one such as Memphis, North Carolina and others are potentially in the mix but the Wildcat big could stay in the draft after four years. But if he’s a free agent, look for Nance to have a competitive recruitment.
1. G Malachi Smith – Chattanooga Mocs
2021-22 stats: 19.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.0 apg
After transferring over from Wright State, Smith became one of the top guards in the SoCon. And after leading the Mocs to a regular-season and tournament title, the 6’4 guard was named Conference Player of the Year. He was on double figures in 32 of the 35 games and had a career-high 36 points on the road at Murray State. Smith also was a quality rebounder for someone his size, including 13 in a single game against Middle Tennessee.
Smith’s all-around offensive ability makes him the top current transfer target in the portal and with him officially coming back from the NBA Draft process, a new team will get his services. And right now, it looks like the Gonzaga Bulldogs could be that team. They did get back Rasir Bolton for another year so things could change and make Smith a free agent, one many high-major programs will try to get.
