North Carolina’s potential next year

Hubert Davis took over a North Carolina program in fantastic shape, but we can certainly give him a ton of credit for how things really came together last season. This was a Tar Heels squad that had lost at home to a struggling Pittsburgh team, and a month later they were on a brilliant run through March Madness. That being said, Davis isn’t going to deliver those types of results every season at the helm.

However, next season could be really special for the Tar Heels. At the moment, they are projected by many to be a top 5 or top 10 team in the nation. Much of this roster has played with each other already, so there are fewer question marks about how the pieces fit together like at rival Duke. All of this is before a potential commitment from Nance, who would only elevate the talent and potential for this group next year.

A fast-paced offense adds their missing piece, getting a Swiss army knife forward who will contribute outside shooting, rebounding, and play an important role all over the floor. The one-two punch of Bacot and Nance could be deadly in the interior offense, while the defense would certainly take a step forward with Nance’s addition.

The loss of Manek made quite the hole, but Nance slides in and makes this a championship favorite team. However, there’s still reason for caution. Before everything came together in March, this team did struggle in some really rough performances, and there’s no guarantee that his team would avoid struggle or injury next season. However, it’s fair to say that nobody else is returning the kind of talent that the Tar Heels will play next year, with the combination of Bacot, Davis, and Love especially lethal.

Adding a Pete Nance to the mix certainly adds to the chances of a legendary season in Chapel Hill. There are going to be a lot of people who look at Duke’s talented recruiting class, but the Tar Heels should be the favorites in the ACC. Even if everything doesn’t go according to plan, this is still a team that has another NCAA Tournament run in them; we’ll have to see if Nance commits to the Tar Heels and how big of a step forward he takes in his final season of college ball.
