5. F Juwan Gary, Nebraska

Juwan Gary has spent his college career in the shadows at Alabama, making an impact but never rising to the level of a star. He’ll have two seasons to emerge in a bigger way at Nebraska.

Last season, Gary averaged 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for the Crimson Tide, shooting 51 percent from the field. He also recorded eight double-doubles and swatted 16 shots on the year.

Gary was forced to redshirt during the 2019-20 season after tearing his ACL. While he’s now several years removed from that injury, it’s not clear if he can regain the form that made him a top 100 prospect coming out of high school.

Fred Hoiberg will likely learn on Gary to provide some of his postseason pedigree to the Huskers, something the coach hasn’t experienced for himself at Nebraska. Gary has been to the NCAA Tournament twice and won an SEC title with the Crimson Tide in 2021.

While Gary was a part-time starter with Alabama, the 6-6, 218-pound forward should be a starter for the Cornhuskers. He should operate as a stretch four, defending in the paint while working on the perimeter on the offense, where he could stand to improve on his 22 percent three-point shooting from a year ago.

Along with Nebraska’s other two transfers, Gary should also help improve the team’s defense. The other two transfers are guards Sam Griesel and Emmanuel Bandoumel.
