Big Ten Basketball: 5 most underrated transfers heading into 2022-23 season
2. F Tydus Verhoeven, Northwestern
Tydus Verhoeven and his elite college basketball name will be expected to play an immediate role in Northwestern’s frontcourt, which has endured the losses of Ryan Young and Pete Nance to ACC rivals Duke and UNC, respectively.
Northwestern will be the third stop of Verhoeven’s collegiate career. He played his first season at Duquesne, where he started a majority of his games as a freshman. He has spent the past three seasons as a member of the UTEP Miners.
As a redshirt junior this past season, Verhoeven had the best season of his career. He averaged 6.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He also averaged one block per game, ranking 12th in C-USA.
Verhoeven is not much of a scorer, but he’s fearless on the boards and makes his bones on the defensive end of the court. In addition to the block per game, he also nearly averaged a steal per game. He also led the Miners with 47 offensive rebounds last season.
The 6-9, 235-pound forward doesn’t bring much for a team’s perimeter offense, either. He didn’t hit a single three-pointer last season.
Expecting the 23-year-old graduate transfer to fill the holes left by Young and Nance is probably expecting too much. Verhoeven is a good player, but he’s probably not at the caliber of those departing bigs.
He will be needed, however, to provide depth and soak up minutes next to Robbie Beran, Matthew Nicholson, and Brooks Barnhizer. There’s a lot of experience in that frontcourt and no reason Verhoeven can’t add to it.
