NCAA Basketball: Top 26 team transfer winners from 2022 offseason
Outgoing transfers: Chibuzo Agbo, Mylik Wilson, Terrence Shannon Jr., Sardaar Calhoun, Kevin McCullar
Incoming transfers: De’Vion Harmon (Oregon), D’maurian Williams (Gardner-Webb), Jaylon Tyson (Texas), Kerwin Walton (North Carolina), Fardaws Aimaq (Utah Valley)
The Red Raiders lost a ton of talent to either the pro ranks or the transfer portal. But their offseason haul was as impressive as any team’s starting with the big man and former Player of the Year from the WAC in Aimaq.
The 6’11 center averaged 18.9 ppg and 13.6 rpg last season at Utah Valley, including a number of huge games on the stat sheet. Two examples would include 34 points versus Pepperdine and 24 points and 22 rebounds in a win over rival BYU. Aimaq also is a two-time WAC Defensive Player of the Year so he’ll fit with Texas Tech’s defensive-oriented system.
The new starting point is back in the Big 12 in De’Vion Harmon, who started out his career at Oklahoma before transferring to Oregon. In three seasons he’s a career 10.2 ppg and 2.0 apg performer and is a solid combo guard that can run an offense.
Both Williams (14.5 ppg on 39% 3PT) and Walton (40% career 3PT) are 6’5 “3 and D” guards that should do well in this system and get plenty of minutes. And Tyson is a former top-50 prospect and 6’8 forward who originally picked Texas Tech before joining head coach Chris Beard over at Texas. If he has a breakout campaign, that alone raises this team’s ceiling.
These are all players that’ll have an impact but the key is Aimaq. If the numbers and overall production are anywhere near similar as it was at Utah Valley, the Red Raiders can compete with Baylor and Kansas at the top of the Big 12.
