NCAA Basketball: Top 26 team transfer winners from 2022 offseason
Outgoing transfers: John Ojiako, David N’Guessan, Nahiem Alleyne
Incoming transfers: Grant Basile (Wright State), John Camden (Memphis), Mylyjael Poteat (Rice)
The frontcourt is the focus of the Hokies’ offseason, especially once it was clear that the team’s best player, Keve Aluma, was moving on. Versatile forward Justyn Mutts is back but he doesn’t provide a ton of scoring production on a game-to-game basis.
That’s where Grant Basile comes in. The 6’9 forward broke out as a full-time starter last season at Wright State, averaging 18.4 ppg and 8.5 rpg. He’s capable of having some huge games offensively, including 37 points against Marshall and 35 points two years ago versus Milwaukee in the Horizon League Tournament. Basile shot just 28% from three-point range but can keep defenses honest.
In case Basile’s defense is a real issue at the ACC level, Mylyjael Poteat can get more minutes next to Mutts. Poteat is a 6’9 and 260-pound combo big that averaged 7.7 ppg and 4.2 rpg in just 13 mpg played off the bench. He was productive when on the court and has the size and in nothing else serves as an upgrade off the bench over Olijako and N’Guessan in the frontcourt.
What boosts Virginia Tech’s offseason to get into the rankings is John Camden. The former top-150 prospect gives the team a true small forward, something they haven’t had in a while. The size for the Hokies is boosted and if Basile can be a double-digit scoring post, they’ll be able to withstand losing Aluma.
