Season outlook for Murray State Basketball

Murray State basketball is as talented as any team in the Missouri Valley Conference. Steve Prohm is as accomplished as any head coach in the new-look league. How he can mesh together so many talented players during one basketball season will be a large challenge.

Prohm has arguably nine, starting quality guards. A four-guard offense wouldn’t be foreign to the Murray State basketball fans, but that still leaves five of his quality perimeter players on the bench.

Burns, Smith, Lestin, and Murray all bring something to the table, but none are proven, go-to, D1 frontcourt players. If one or more of these big men can be a legitimate threat in the paint the fast-paced, guard-oriented Racer offense can run on all cylinders.

If Perry is the difference-maker many believe then the rest of the guard rotation can fall into place. Murray State’s guards are potentially as good as any in the conference, and the Valley is a guard-driven league.

Prohm is too good at what he does for this talented team to be any worse than the Valley’s seventh-best team. They could be much better. If this abundance of talent can find a way to work cohesively, a top half or better finish would be likely.

This team is built to withstand injuries more than most and we’ve already seen health scares at Drake and Northern Iowa. The Racers will be a constant threat during their first season in the Missouri Valley Conference.
