2. Which team has been the biggest disappointment so far?

Watson

Texas Tech. Mark Adams did a marvelous job in his first year replacing Chris Beard, finishing 27-10 and taking Tech to the Sweet 16. This season has had a bumpier start. The Red Raiders are still 10-4 but are 0-4 in Quad 1 games, losing to Creighton, Ohio State, TCU, and Kansas. Eight of Tech’s 10 wins are considered Quad 4, the lowest quadrant in the relatively new NET system. The other two wins are Quad 3, which also doesn’t help their resume. The Red Raiders have yet to beat a team ranked in the top 125 on KenPom.

Although Texas Tech is an NCAA Tournament quality team who will end up with a resume worthy of selection, they might actually be on the outside looking in if the field were selected right now. Of course, their slow start has been affected by Fardaws Aimaq’s foot injury. He should be back in time for a stretch run.

It’s really difficult to pick a “disappointment” in this conference but I’ll say Texas Tech with the big caveat that the injury to Aimaq was a big blow. Even still the talent is there for the Red Raiders to be a really strong team and I think they are. Their four losses prior to Saturday’s game with Oklahoma were by an average of fewer than seven points. If there is a disappointment in a conference like this, to this point it is Texas Tech.

When every team has an overall winning record thus far, it’s hard to choose who’s been the biggest disappointment. But when you look at conference results, even if it’s a small sample size, that’s where you get a picture.

I think Baylor’s been the biggest disappointment. I’m not sure who projected them to go 0-3 to start conference play. The heartbreakers against TCU and Kansas State were definitely disappointing and not what fans expect from Baylor. It is only the start of conference season and there’s a lot of basketball left to be played but Baylor has just been underwhelming.
