Utah State Aggies

I’m not a Bracketologist, so there are always a few teams at this point in the season whose resumes completely confuse me. None more than Utah State, who has a great overall record of 22-7 and 11-5 in Mountain West play. The problem with them is clear as day though… what are their great wins?

This is a question that’s asked to many mid-major teams with gaudy records. Programs such as Kent State, Oral Roberts, and others have no shot at an at-large bid because of the lack of Quad 1 and 2 wins. Right now, Utah State doesn’t have a single Quad 1 victory, currently 0-4 overall. In their defense, they are 7-1 vs Quad 2 opponents, which include over Oral Roberts, New Mexico, and Nevada.

But can Oral Roberts, who is going to need the autobid out of the Summit League to get in the field itself, really be a team’s signature victory to get in the field? And the Aggies still have a couple of bad losses to answer for in the non-conference, including a Quad 4 defeat to Weber State. How many Quad 2 wins can overcome that?

This team still has good metrics and a top-40 NET ranking. And they do have a Quad 1 opportunity to end the regular season in Boise State at home. That game could singlehandedly get Utah State in the field, but a loss may mean that they’ll need to make some noise in the Mountain West Tournament to feel good about its prospects.
