Georgetown Basketball: 9 candidates to replace Patrick Ewing as head coach
By Joey Loose
John Becker
Georgetown is a prestigious university and can again be an excellent institution for basketball play in the Big East. We’re solely focused on finding the right coach to get them back into that position of winning games and making headlines for the right reason. Our first coach on the list isn’t one of the sexiest names on the list, but he’s certainly shown he can win a ton of ballgames.
Becker went to school at Catholic in Washington DC and coached both there and in town at Gallaudet. The rest of his coaching career has come at Vermont, where he’s been head coach since 2011 after half a decade as an assistant. Simply put, he’s built the Catamounts into a winning machine, taking the last seven America East regular season titles in a row; leading Vermont to four NCAA Tournaments in the process. He’s also won at least 20 games in every complete season he’s coached.
Georgetown can do a whole lot worse than someone who averages nearly 24 wins a season and is intimately familiar with coaching in DC. Becker has been at Vermont for a dozen years already and this is exactly the kind of job he’s been waiting to pounce on. Whether it’s the type of hire that would excite Georgetown fans is another story, but he’s shown he can win the America East; can he do it in a much bigger basketball league?
