Georgetown Basketball: 9 candidates to replace Patrick Ewing as head coach
By Joey Loose
Mike Brey
We’re not sure what exactly the Hoyas are looking for in their next head coach, outside of someone who can instill a winning culture, but we’re definitely going to keep giving bonus points to coaches who’ve worked and lived in Washington DC. Not only does this next coach fall into that category, but he’s not even employed right now and is right there for the taking.
Brey graduated from George Washington after growing up in nearby Maryland; then spent five years at the famous DeMatha High School just outside DC. After a long stint assisting Coach K at Duke, he started his head coaching career at Delaware, leading the Fightin’ Hens to a pair of NCAA Tournaments. Brey spent the last 23 years as head coach at Notre Dame, leading the Fighting Irish through several impressive periods, transitioning from the Big East to the ACC and making a pair of Elite Eights.
Though his time at Notre Dame just came to an end this week, Brey still has mileage left in him and can be a great piece for several years at Georgetown. He spent more than a decade coaching against the Hoyas in the Big East and he knows DC and how to recruit all over the east coast. Additionally, there’s no buyout to maneuver as he’s a free agent. Brey isn’t the top name on the list and is technically a retread hire, but this would be a great figure to turn around this program.
