Georgia Tech Basketball: 8 candidates to replace Josh Pastner as head coach
By Joey Loose
Grant McCasland
The Yellow Jackets should leave no stone unturned, which likely means reaching out to a few dozen more names that aren’t on today’s list. We can only look at so many candidates and we’re certainly not wasting time by considering this one. McCasland has been a winner everywhere he’s gone and will one day be a fantastic hire for a major conference program.
A former point guard at Baylor, he was a successful head coach at Midland and Midwestern State before joining Scott Drew’s staff at his alma mater. His D1 head coaching career began with a 20-win season at Arkansas State before taking over the program at North Texas in 2017. He has proceeded to win the CBI, win a pair of CUSA regular season crowns, and take the Mean Green to an NCAA Tournament upset win over Purdue back in 2021.
McCasland is passing all the tests with North Texas, though you have to wonder if Georgia Tech is the kind of job he’d take to leave the Mean Green. For starters, his footprint seems to be more in Texas and that part of the country, especially with his past experience in the Big 12. He could be a significant upgrade for the Yellow Jackets and is certainly worth a call, but he might be one of those coaches (think Dusty May) that’s got their eyes open for something more.
