Big South Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
14. Jermaine Marrow
A 6’0 point guard from Newport News, Virginia, Marrow was a backcourt piece for four seasons at Hampton. He was an extremely important part of the Pirates program and one of their best offensive players in program history, but there’s a catch. Hampton played in the MEAC in Marrow’s first two seasons, meaning today we’re only taking into account his production as an upperclassman. Fortunately, there was a lot of it.
Marrow’s junior season was meteoric, averaging 24.4 points and 4.9 assists per game as the Pirates adjusted decently well to their new conference. He had a 38-point effort against Richmond early in the season and topped 40 points against High Point that February. After taking the Pirates to a decent run in the CIT, he was back for even more as a senior, averaging 24.8 points and 6.5 assists this time around. He had a career-high 14 assists in a win over Charleston Southern and helped the Pirates go on a run late despite an uneven season overall.
Marrow averaged greater than 24 points a game in those two seasons so it’s not shocking that he was First Team All-Big South both years as well. In addition to finishing Top 10 in the nation in points, he was among the Big South’s best in assists, steals, and many other metrics. Hampton basketball wasn’t winning all their games or making waves, but Marrow was a major piece of the success they did experience during that early run in the Big South.
