NCAA Basketball: A look at top early contenders for No. 1 prospect Cooper Flagg
Duke Blue Devils
A number of players have mentioned Duke as the “dream school” growing up and Flagg is no different, which is why this program is believed to be an early favorite for his services. The Blue Devils are no strangers to landing No. 1 prospects, whether it’s Coach K or the new guy leading the program, Jon Scheyer.
The class that Flagg is in may determine how viable Duke ultimately is. Also in the 2025 class are five-star forwards, Cameron and Cayden Boozer. They’re the sons of former Duke great Carlos Boozer and the blue blood program will be after them too. But reportedly, these guys would prefer not to play with one another, which makes sense since they play similar positions. So if Flagg does indeed move to the 2024 class, it would make perfect sense for all sides.
Iowa Hawkeyes
Although the Hawkeyes aren’t the juggernaut program with national championships that others are, Coach Fran McCaffery can make the case that he’s one of the best options in terms of offensive development. He just had two 1st round NBA Draft picks on his roster in Kris and Keegan Murray, as well as a former NCAA Basketball National Player of the Year big man, Luka Garza.
We’ve seen No. 1 prospects not go to blue blood programs, including Markelle Fultz of Washington and Anthony Edwards of Georgia, who ended up as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. Flagg would be the unquestioned star and go-to option at Iowa and in that offensive system, would put up absurd numbers.
