Big Ten Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
24. Melo Trimble
Trimble is a 6’3 guard from Upper Marlboro, Maryland who played a vital role in the Terrapins’ initial run in the Big Ten. A top 40 recruit from the Class of 2014, Trimble arrived on campus right as Maryland joined their new conference. A full-time starter for three years in the backcourt, Trimble made himself right at home in College Park.
His freshman numbers were already quite impressive, putting up 16.2 points per game in a 28-win season for the Terrapins, with the program finishing 2nd place in their initial Big Ten season. He’d put similar numbers as a sophomore and helped lead Maryland to the Sweet Sixteen, with 24 points and 8 rebounds in their second-round win over Hawaii. In his final season, Trimble averaged 16.8 points and led Maryland on another trip to the Big Dance.
Trimble was named First Team All-Big Ten in each of his three collegiate seasons and was on the midseason watch list for the Wooden Award each year as well. He was a monumental contributor at point and all over the court for the Terrapins, with great scoring and shooting numbers while also running the offense and defense in great shape. Maryland has yet to make consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament since Trimble departed in 2017.
