MEAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
10. Jeff Short
A 6’4 guard from the Bronx, Short stayed close to home at Fordham at the beginning of his college career, but that’s not where he spent his best days. He was a minor contributor off the bench for the Rams before transferring to Norfolk State for his final two seasons. With the Spartans, Short was a starter in the backcourt and did plenty of great things between 2014 and 2016.
In year one with the Spartans, he averaged 19.1 points per game, made nearly 40% of his 3-pointers, and led Norfolk State to a 20-win season with a trip to the CIT. Though the overall offensive figures weren’t as impressive during his senior year, he was still a potent backcourt weapon for Norfolk State, taking the program to another 2nd place finish in the MEAC.
For his impressive contributions, especially on offense, Short was named First Team All-MEAC in each of those seasons. His offensive metrics were quite impressive and his 648 points as a junior was 20th in the entire nation. The shooting was good and his role in winning basketball for Norfolk State cannot be understated. It remains a shame how his team came up just short in the MEAC Tournament in back-to-back seasons.
