Big 12 Basketball: Each team’s best acquisition out of 2023 transfer portal
Max Abmas – 6’1 Guard – Texas Longhorns
Max Abmas looks to make a splash out of the transfer portal with the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 after closing his career out on a high note in the Summit League with Oral Roberts. He finished his career as Summit League Player of the Year and Tournament MVP en route to a decorated career with the Golden Eagles.
Abmas left on a high note in leading Oral Roberts to a 30-5 record this past season and an 18-0 record in Summit League action. He produced 21.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.0 apg and 1.1 spg while shooting 37.3 percent from 3-point land and 43.6 percent from the field this past season.
He led the Summit League in points (743), finished second in total assists (137), second in 3-point field goal percentage and ninth in steals (37) in leading his squad to their second Summit League Tournament Championship in three years. Abmas tied his career-high of 11 assists along with 26 points in the title game to take home Summit League Tournament MVP as well.
His offensive rating of 123.4 ranked fourth in the conference while his PER of 24.7 ranked third in league play. He’s a master at running the offense and securing victories as evidenced by his 70-42 record as a member of the Oral Roberts rotation.
He’s got a bit of NCAA Tournament experience under his belt given his 2-2 record across four appearances. He’s produced 23.0 ppg, 4.8 apg, 2.5 rpg and 1.0 spg on 34.3 percent shooting from deep and 38.9 percent shooting from the field.
Abmas will look to bring some of his offensive magic to the Texas backcourt in the Big 12 where they bolster a returning rotation of Tyrese Hunter, Dillon Mitchell and Dylan Disu. He won’t be the only newcomer either as they also welcome Kadin Shedrick, Ze’Rik Onyema, Chendall Weaver and Ithiel Horton out of the transfer portal.
