NEC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
25. Sidney Sanders Jr.
A 5’11 point guard from Charleston, South Carolina, Sanders broke into the college game by way of Polk State, starring for two seasons at the junior college. He landed at Fairleigh Dickinson back in 2012 and would spend his last two years of eligibility with the Knights. He was a minor scorer and contributor as a junior, but really broke out in his senior year under new head coach Greg Herenda.
That senior season was his only after 2013 and it really was a massive step forward. Sanders averaged 19.1 points and 5.8 assists for the Knights, becoming quite a leader on offense for the program. He had numerous 30-point outings during NEC play and had a 13-assist performance against LIU. The Knights weren’t winning a ton of games, but Sanders was their focal point all year long.
Sanders earned First Team All-NEC honors by leading the league in steals and free throws and finishing third in total points. His overall contributions were necessary in a subpar season for Fairleigh Dickinson, but kept the program somewhat competitive in the process. As mentioned, Sanders took that major step forward in his second year with the Knights and turned into one phenomenal point guard by the end of his college career.
