SEC Basketball: Each team’s best acquisition out of 2023 transfer portal
Micah Handlogten – 7’1 Center/Forward – Florida Gators
Micah Handlogten is another sizeable name that’s stepping into the SEC this upcoming season following a productive debut season in the Sun Belt Conference with the Marshall Thundering Herd. A native of North Carolina, Handlogten turned heads quickly this past season with his impact on the hardwood.
He was named Sun Belt Rookie of the Year this past year after producing 7.6 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.3 bpg, 1.3 spg and 1.2 apg on 66.2 percent shooting from the floor across 32 games, all starts for the Thundering Herd.
He’s got a tremendous feel for where to be in the painted area when shots go up and has shown he doesn’t always need the ball in his hands as a scorer to be effective. His 109 offensive rebounds led the Sun Belt in 2022-23 as did his rebounds (315) and defensive rating (87.6). His PER of 23.7 ranked him fifth in the conference as well.
He nearly racked up 20 rebounds in his best outing in Year 1 as he went off for a career-high 19 points and 19 rebounds along with five blocks back on Jan. 7 against Coastal Carolina. He set his career-high mark in blocks at six back in November against the Akron Zips.
He uses his length in a variety of ways to affect the paint and is quite the shot-blocking presence. He finished second in the Sun Belt and 13th among the entire NCAA in blocks with 75, only a freshman. The ceiling for Handlogten certainly rises as he joins the Gators in the SEC.
Handlogten is one of a few names to get to know with Florida out of the portal as he’ll join five over transfers as new additions. The Gators return just four players from last year’s 16-17 squad.
