SEC Basketball: Each team’s best acquisition out of 2023 transfer portal
Tasos Kamateros – 6’8 Forward – Vanderbilt Commodores
Tasos Kamateros is looking to make waves with the Vanderbilt Commodores out of the transfer portal as he brings his international game to the SEC from the Summit League. He’s developed into quite an asset at the forward spot with the South Dakota Coyotes from 2019-23.
Kamateros put up 12.5 ppg, 6.4 rpg and 1.7 apg on 40.1 percent from 3-point land and 44.9 percent from the floor across 31 appearances, 30 starts, in 2022-23. He knows how to keep defenders honest with his ability to operate as a pick-and-roll option or floor-spacer with his outside shooting.
He showed off his all-around usage at the forward spot, posting a career-high 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point land along with six rebounds back on Feb. 25 in a victory over UMKC. He ranked 12th in the Summit League in 3-pointers made (57) and 15th in field goals made (146) despite being a frontcourt starter this past season.
His career-best of 3-pointers made was set at six back on February 19, 2022, in a victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks in conference action. Kamateros went 6-of-9 from deep in finishing with 24 points in that victory.
He’s a 6-foot-8 native of Greece that’s shown he can operate inside and out at the stretch forward spot as he’s done in the Summit League. He’s been productive over the past two seasons in showing he can create off the perimeter and also make plays for others when needed.
With Tyrin Lawrence returning and the addition of Kamateros, the Commodores return in 2023-24 looking to make some more noise in the SEC after finishing fourth place in the standings this past season. Ven Allen-Lubin (Notre Dame) is another transfer portal addition to keep an eye on as well alongside Kamateros in the frontcourt.
